read moreHiring a diverse team offers fresh perspectives that boost innovation, productivity and success. But it doesn’t stop there. Being able to attract a diverse workforce is one thing, but creating an environment where people feel they belong and can bring their authentic selves to work, is another.
Despite being members of a highly globalized society, where contact with individuals from a broad spectrum of (cultural) backgrounds is the norm, one would be surprised at the frequency of unhealthy and impersonal working environments where employees don’t feel like they can be themselves.
Not addressing the atmosphere in the workplace timely and adequately may escalate to conflict and potentially even premature termination of employment. Bringing diversity to the workplace does not necessarily equal the absence of bias, discrimination and unfair treatment.
In recent news, the Dutch government has acknowledged for the first time that institutional racism was a factor in the tax office’s treatment of ethnic minorities, leading to excesses such as the childcare benefits scandal.
Police brutality in the US has been at the centre of global headlines for years. Although these two examples have racial differences/issues at their core, there are plenty of others concerning gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, disabilities, religious or ethical values systems and political beliefs.

Born and raised in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Neira was forced to leave her home country due to the political instability in the nineties. Ever since, she has studied and lived in different countries (Spain, Croatia, Italy, and Curacao (a small island in the Caribbean) until finally settling in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, some years ago.
Having lived by José Marti’s famous words (I come from everywhere, and everywhere I go), it wasn’t until she started working in a predominantly Dutch working environment that she became interested in the dynamics of an intercultural and diverse working environment and more importantly, how to bridge differences with the goal of creating the type of environment where everyone feels welcome, valued and where differences are celebrated rather than subdued.
Neira is a cross-cultural trainer at VU University, Amsterdam, providing workshops to students and (academic) staff. With her high-energy personality and passion for all things intercultural, she hopes to bring new-found insights and strategies on cross-cultural and DEIB-related topics through her workshops.
This 3 hours workshop is FREE of charge; nevertheless, in exchange, we will ask you to deliver honest and constructive feedback by the end of the session.
Please note that recordings of this workshop will not be available.
