Ease your way into the Dutch student life – for Latin American students

The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness of cultural differences. Specifically, the differences between Dutch and Latin American culture. Cross cultural theories will be provided in a comprehensible way and participants are encouraged to engage in interactive activities to help enhance their effectiveness in recognizing and dealing with cultural differences. The emphasis of the workshop will be on Dutch culture (hierarchy, direct communication style, feedback etc.) in comparison to Latin American culture and how to best navigate these differences.

This workshop is for you if: 

  • You’re an international student from a Latin American country 
  • You’re about to study in the Netherlands or already started 
  • You’re Latin American or Dutch and interested in learning more about both cultures  

 

During the workshop you will:  

  • Increase your awareness on cultural differences and culture shock
  • Deepen your understanding about the Dutch culture
  • Improve your skills to interact with your Dutch teachers, fellow students and others 

 

About the trainer: 

Sylvia van Glabbeek is a trainer actively working to promote intercultural understanding and exchange between Latin America and The Netherlands. Originally from Amsterdam, she has lived and worked in Colombia for more than 3 years and spent several months in Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru and Argentina. 

She holds a Master degree in Communication Science and a certificate for intercultural training from the European Institute for Intercultural Development. She is currently working at the international office of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam as the representative for Latin America. She is helping Latin American students with starting their studies in the Netherlands. Previously, she worked as a manager at a Health Club, managing a team of 35 employees.  She also was a Dutch teacher at the embassy in Colombia.

On a daily basis, she enjoys drinking coffee with friends, dancing salsa or other Latin dance styles, read and meditate.
Sylvia speaks fluent Dutch, English and Spanish.
