Risk management of cultural issues for oversees projects – IC capacity building for NGOs

The absence of cultural sensibility and the lack of knowledge of local culture from international organisation can result in a non-acceptable behavior of expatriates, misunderstandings between them and the locals and in an organisational incapacity to respect the local values and beliefs. Those situations can eventually raise the level of risk for personal security of all employees, affect negatively project results and undermine the public credibility of the NGO towards the local population and the authorities.

Due to the lack of resources NGOs take the decision to start projects in a new country without proper risk analysis for local culture and for other sensitive issues. The employee, who is then going to work abroad need at the end of the day to deal with intercultural issues on his-her own, accepting the expatriation’s assignment as if it is “standard part of the deal”.

In order to identify capacity building activities to reduce the level of risk according to the organisation’s Duty of Care, we will be looking at intercultural communication threats and issues through the lens of risk management.

In this workshop, you will:

• Identify capacity building activities to improve the efficiency and quality of intercultural communication management

About the Trainer:

Eric Jean, M.P.A. graduated from ENAP in public administration as an analyst. Mr. Jean carried out his first humanitarian mandate in Afghanistan with Médecins du Monde Canada in 2003 and then participated in 8 other humanitarian missions for international medical organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières, ALIMA and the World Health Organization in 2014 in the Philippines. He held various positions in management of field operations in emergency contexts in Central and West Africa, the Caribbean and Asia. “Recognized as a man of the field”, Mr. Jean firmly believes in dignity, ethical behaviour and respectful communications between human beings from different cultures. It is these values that transcend his professional activities.
